As gas prices continue to rise we see more and more folks turning to public transit as a more affordable way to get around. Is it really worth it though? In this article, I will try to give the answer.

The answer depends a lot on your personal tolerance levels and your financial situation. If your finances are tight and saving money is important to you, it would make sense to take the bus. Especially if you like in a city with great transit system like San Francisco or NY. If you place a premium on privacy, don’t enjoy walking in the streets and don’t want to have to deal with strangers then taking the car is the best way to go, even if it costs more.

Not all cities have great transportation systems btw. Some suburban communities don’t have good systems at all. Keep in mind that when you take the bus you have to sit next to a stranger. To some folks this isn’t a big deal; some friendly folks even enjoy talking to strangers. Well, I’m not one of them; I prefer being in the privacy of my own car. I don’t want to have to be subjected to overhearing random conversations of fellow passengers either. I want to be able to listen to any song I want on the radio and roll down my windows as I please. The advantage of utilizing public transportation is that you don’t have to be responsible for the cost of maintaining and repairing a vehicle (if you decide to give up your car).
